IMIA Medical Interpreter Certification Objectives

1. To establish a process to determine whether a potential candidate has the required knowledge and skills to function competently as a professional medical interpreter according to the standards and ethical practice of the profession.
2. To provide to a potential candidate a validation of their knowledge and skills.
3. To provide to a potential candidate a professional credential.
4. To provide those who work with medical interpreters with a certified professional that meets the standards and ethical practices needed to ensure quality communication and patient safety and quality care.
